This Saturday, October 22 at 12:55 p.m., the Met Live in HD presents Mozart's Don Giovanni. The performance, happening live at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, will be simulcast in movie theaters all over the world. Jennifer Koh, Musical America’s 2016 Instrumentalist of the Year, headlines an album of Tchaikovsky’s complete works for violin and orchestra. Tchaikovsky’s Concerto in D Major is one of the most celebrated and daunting works in the violin repertoire. The subdued Sérénade mélancolique illustrates the composer’s ear for orchestral color. The delicate Valse-Scherzo melds old-fashioned elegance with spirited playfulness. Souvenir d’un lieu cher’s poignant, nostalgic mood gives way to a delightful finale. Koh shared the top prize in the 1994 Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, where she played the Tchaikovsky (and Brahms) concerto and won three special prizes, including for the best performance of Tchaikovsky’s work.
Violinist Joshua Bell and cellist Steven Isserlis are joined by two acclaimed musical forces – pianist Jeremy Denk and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, of which Bell is Music Director – in a landmark joint recording, For the Love of Brahms (Sony Classical). Available September 30, 2016, the new album is a unique project that features works of Brahms and Schumann that Bell calls “music about love and friendship.”
For nearly a decade, the virtuoso violinist Caroline Goulding has performed with the world’s premier orchestras, in recital and on record, blossoming from the “precociously gifted” (Gramophone) child who made her solo debut with the Cleveland Orchestra at age 13 to “a skilled violinist well on her way to an important career” (Washington Post). Now, on July 29th, 2016 the German label ARS will release Caroline’s first new recording since her GRAMMY-nominated and chart-topping 2009 debut, released when the violinist was just 16.
The Emerson String Quartet celebrates 40 years together by releasing a box set on Deutsche Grammophon of their complete recordings. This 52 CD collection includes their complete output on DG and features highlights such as the 9 GRAMMY awards, 3 Gramophone Magazine Awards; complete cycles by Shostakovich, Beethoven and Bartók; plus String Quartets by Haydn, Tchaikovsky, Schubert and many more.

Stephen Lias is an accomplished and inspirational composer of music for orchestra and large ensembles, chamber ensembles, and voice. He also founded the field seminar “Composing in the Wilderness,” which he leads annually.
As a self-made specialist in music inspired by the U.S. National Parks, Stephen Lias has been Artist-in-Residence at Rocky Mountain, Glacier, Denali, Glacier Bay, and Gates of the Arctic National Parks, and has written over a dozen park-related pieces. Many of these works are featured on his new CD, Encounters: Music Inspired by Our National Parks.

The San Francisco-based Cypress String Quartet (Cecily Ward, violin; Tom Stone, violin; Ethan Filner, viola; and Jennifer Kloetzel, cello) will disband in the summer of 2016 after 20 fulfilling years of performing together. The Cleveland Institute of Music adds Claire Chase, founder and co-artistic director of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), to its illustrious list of Honorary Doctorates at its 91st Commencement Ceremony on May 14, 2016 in Kulas Hall. During the ceremony Chase will deliver the Commencement Address to the 2016 graduating class.

Today is the 100th birthday of Yehudi Menuhin, the legendary violinist and conductor. To mark the occasion, Warner Classics has released an 80-CD set called The Menuhin Century, which spans the 53 years from 1929 to 1982, focusing on the violinist’s landmark interpretations and recordings never before released. Bruno Monsaingeon was a student and lifelong friend of Menuhin’s, and responsible for curating this set. He spoke with WCLV’s Angela Mitchell from a studio in Paris.
In celebration of Johann Sebastian Bach's 331st birthday on March 21, violinist Rachel Barton Pine released "Testament: Complete Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin by Johann Sebastian Bach."

WCLV was live at Severance Hall on Saturday, March 5. The Cleveland Orchestra, under the direction of Alan Gilbert, presented a program of Robert Schumann, Antonin Dvořák, and Carl Nielsen. Stephen Hough was the soloist on Dvořák's Piano Concerto, and he spoke with Angela Mitchell at intermission.
