Celebrating Black History Month With New Recordings

In celebration of Black History Month, Angela Mitchell and Brett Mitchell are releasing new recordings of songs by Black American composers every Friday in February.

On February 5, Angela and Brett released “For You There Is No Song” by H. Leslie Adams, who was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1932. This song is from his 1960 song cycle, “Five Millay Songs” on texts by Edna St. Vincent Millay.

On February 12, Angela and Brett shared “Night” by Florence Price. Ms. Price wrote the song in 1946 on a poem by Louise C. Wallace. Using vivid imagery, the text describes a child falling asleep as night falls.

On February 19, the Mitchells featured William Grant Still’s “Grief.” The poem is by LeRoy V. Brant, who was inspired after seeing a statue of an angel while out on a walk.

The final song, with a planned release of February 26, will be “Soliloquy” by John W. Work (1901-67).
